Digo que es mi casa, pero escuchad a las
alegres palomas
que convierten mi tejado en escenario de sus
arrullos,
que se acurrucan en torno al gablete durante
todo el día
y llenan las chimeneas con su canto
melodioso.
Nuestra casa, dicen ellas. Y la mía, afirma
el gato
mientras esparce su dorado pelaje sobre las
sillas.
Y otro tanto dice el perro, irguiéndose
furioso
si cualquier pie extraño profana el sendero.
Y el corzo que podaba mis jardines,
nuestro antiguo jardinero, hacía suyas estas
posesiones;
mas ahora, ya derrocado, vigila mi humilde
morada
y su reino de antaño, tan solo desde la
carretera.

My house, I say. But hark to the sunny doves
That make my roof the arena of their loves,
That gyre about the gable all day long
And fill the chimneys with their murmurous song:
Our house, they say; and mine, the cat declares
And spreads his golden fleece upon the chairs;
And mine the dog, and rises stiff with wrath
If any alien foot profane the path.
So, too, the buck that trimmed my terraces,
Our whilom gardener, called the garden his;
Who now, deposed, surveys my plain abode
And his late kingdom, only from the road.
